Food insecurity research round table hosted by Feeding America
Dr. Barbara Fiese, Director of the Family Resiliency Center, and Dr. Craig Gundersen, Executive Director of the National Soybean Research Laboratory and a member of Feeding America’s Research Technical Advisory Group, will participate in the Food Insecurity Research Round Table discussions hosted by Feeding America, the nation's leading domestic hunger-relief charity.
The purpose of the round table series is to explore the impact of food banks and examine the broader holes in the knowledge base around food banking. The discussions are also concerned with the questions researchers should be asking and the appropriate metrics to explore them.
Food insecurity is the condition of being without dependable access to an ample amount of affordable, healthy food. Rates of food insecurity in the U.S. have accelerated in the last five years, and nearly one in six Americans is unable to obtain adequate nutrition. Feeding America’s mission is to feed America’s food insecure though a nationwide network of member food banks—charitable organizations that distribute food to those who have difficulty purchasing enough nourishment to avoid hunger. Feeding America and its member food banks feed 37 million people annually with the goal to annually provide 2.3 billion meals for families, 1.6 billion meals for children, and 344 million meals for seniors by 2018.
